Walters, Clarke strike NJCAA gold

Ruebin Walters crushed his rivals to capture the men's 110 metres hurdles title, at the National Junior College Athletics Association (NJCAA) Outdoor Track And Field Championships, in Texas, USA, on Thursday. The Trinidad and Tobago athlete stopped the clock at 13.62 seconds for a huge cushion on the runner-up, American Robert Dunning (14.04).

Walters also secured a podium finish in the 400m hurdles, the Central Arizona College student claiming silver in 50.68 seconds. There was silver too for his Central Arizona teammate Hezekiel Romeo, a 17.73 metres throw earning him second spot in the men's shot put.

New Mexico Junior College sprinter Kayelle Clarke led a T&T medal sweep in the women's 200m event. Clarke struck gold in a personal best 23.16 seconds. There were PRs (personal records) too for Monroe College's Zakiya Denoon and South Plains College student Mauricia Prieto. Denoon clocked 23.56 to seize silver, while Prieto bagged bronze in 23.61.

Clarke produced an 11.62 seconds run to earn bronze in the women's 100m final. Prieto (11.81) and Denoon (11.82) finished sixth and seventh, respectively. South Plains sprinter Aaliyah Telesford clocked 12.02 in the preliminaries, and did not qualify for the championship race.

Central Arizona freshman Portious Warren threw 15.08m to finish fourth in the women's shot put. And Southwestern Christian College's Jamoul Pierre was fifth in his men's 400m preliminary round heat in 48.76 seconds, and did not progress to the final.

Reyare Thomas was golden at the New York Twilight Meet, the T&T sprinter winning the women's 100m final in 11.46 seconds. Andre Marcano clocked 21.90 for fifth spot in the men's 200m. He had qualified for the 100m final with a wind-assisted 10.57 run, but was disqualified in the championship race for a false start.

At the Glenn D Loucks Games, also in New York, Marcano won the men's 100m dash in 10.80 seconds.

In North Carolina, Marissa Gale topped the Aggie Last Chance meet women's 200m "B" race in 24.53 seconds. She also competed in the 400m "B" race, finishing fourth in 55.54. And Odou Hazel was third in the men's 400m "B" race in 47.23.

In Tennessee, Asa Guevara finished fifth in the Conference USA Championship men's 100m final in 10.62 seconds. The University of Texas at El Paso (UTEP) student clocked 21.25 in his 200m qualifying heat, and did not advance to the final. Western Kentucky University sophomore Peli Alzola was eliminated in both the women's 100m and 200m events. She clocked 11.82 seconds in her 100m heat and 24.25 in the qualifying round of the longer sprint.

At the Pac-12 Championships, in Washington, Jamol James clocked 10.46 seconds in the men's 100m preliminaries to secure a lane in the final. However, a minor injury forced the Arizona State University senior out of the championship race.

At the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) Championships, in Florida, Breon Mullings finished third in his men's 200m qualifying heat in 21.63 seconds, and did not advance to the final. His University of Miami teammate, Trishelle Leacock suffered the same fate in the women's 100m and 200m events. She clocked 12.04 in the 100 and 24.72 in the 200.
