Cedenio settles for 4th place at Prefontaine meet

T&T's Machel Cedenio had to settle for fourth place in the Men's 400 metres at the 42nd Prefontaine Classic at Hayward Field in Eugene, Oregon, USA, yesterday. The Classic is a member of the IAAF Diamond League of elite international track and field meets.

The 20-year-old clocked 45.45 seconds to follow Olympic champion Kirani James (44.22) of Grenada, American LaShawn Merritt (44.39) and Botswana's Isaac Makwala (45.37) to the line, respectively.

The race lived up to expectations as the 400m rivalry between James, 23, and Merritt, 29, who have met in the Classic for a record fifth time. With the victory, the Grenadian increases his career head-to-head lead against Merritt to 12-7.

Filling the other spots were Abdalleleh Haroun of Qatar in fifth in 45.66, sixth was Saudi Arabia's Youssef Ahmed Masraji in 46.08 followed by Steven Gardiner of the Bahamas in 46.80 and Jamaican Rusheen McDonald in 46.82.

Olympic champion Keshorn Walcott best effort of 74.99 earned his seventh spot in the men's javelin event. His other two attempts ended in foul throws.

Ihab Abdelrahman emerged the winner with a splendid 87.37 throw. Julius Yego of Kenya was second with 84.68 and German Thomas Rohler was third with a toss of 82.53.
