Borel takes Diamond League bronze

Newsday :: 06.06.2016

National field athlete, Cleopatra Borel threw a season's best distance of 18.78m to secure bronze at the 2016 IAAF Diamond League meet which launched off in Birmingham, England, yesterday.

After just missing out on a medal by finishing fourth in last week's fifth Diamond League staging in Rome, the reigning national and Pan American champion hauled the sphere an impressive distance to secure a cherished podium spot.

Eventual winner, American Tia Brooks, was also in fine form as she threw a personal best distance of 19.73m, beating New Zealand's Valerie Adams who bagged silver with her 19.63m try.

And in the women's 100m final, Michelle Lee Ahye finished a distant eighth in 11.48 seconds.

After clocking 11.38s in Heat 'A', Lee Ahye was unable to better or even match her previous time in the final.

Taking top honours this time was American English Gardner (11.02s) followed by Dutch sprinter Dafne Schippers (11.09s) and USA's Tianna Bartoletta (11.11s) respectively.

It has been a disappointing Diamond League week for Ahye who was again far from her best in Rome where she placed sixth in a pedestrian 11.23 seconds.

The next phase of the 2016 IAAF Diamond League runs off in Oslo, Norway, on Friday.
