Hislop lands sprint double

Akanni Hislop underlined his class with a superb victory in the NAAA NGC/THA National Junior Track and Field Championship boys' under-20 200 metres final, at the Dwight Yorke Stadium, here in Bacolet, Tobago, yesterday. With that golden run, the Tobago athlete completed the sprint double.

Hislop, unfazed by a false start that eliminated Jonathan Baker, settled back into his blocks to await the starter's orders a second time. The Zenith sprinter came off the turn in front, and stayed there, winning the half-lap event in 21.13 seconds—well inside the 21.35 World Junior Championship qualifying standard.

Jalen Purcell made a gallant effort to reel in Hislop. The 2016 Carifta Games champion, however, was simply too good, forcing Purcell to accept silver in 21.48 seconds. Dwight St Hillare bagged bronze in 21.58.

Anya Akili ended the Junior Championships with four individual gold medals. The Kaizen Panthers athlete won yesterday's girls' under-18 400m hurdles final in one minute, 05.44 seconds, as well as the high jump with a 1.50 metres clearance, to add to her 100m hurdles and long jump triumphs on day one.

Rae-Ann Serville captured the girls' under-16 200m title to add to the gold medals she had earned in the 100m hurdles and 400m flat events, on Saturday. Serville produced another command performance, getting to the line in 24.64 seconds to lead a Memphis Pioneers medal sweep. Her clubmates, Deleth Charles and Jeneil Morris took silver and bronze, respectively, in 25.19 and 25.23.

Serville then teamed up with J'Da Browne, Charles and Morris for 4x100m gold in 47.62 seconds.

There were three individual gold medals for US-based Khemani Roberts. Winner of the girls' under-20 400m and high jump titles on day one, the teen Panther struck gold in yesterday's long jump with a 5.44m leap.

Falcons field athlete Chelsea James completed an impressive throwing double when she crushed her rivals in the girls' under-20 shot put. The discus champion threw the iron ball 14.18m to triumph in the shot put as well.

Konnel Jacob, of Jaguars, also earned double gold. He produced a 16.49m effort to claim the boys' under-18 shot put title, adding to Saturday's javelin success.

Daniel Gibbs returned a time of 1:57.83 to grab gold in the boys' under-20 800m. With about 150 metres to go, Gibbs made his move, surging past Enensatefaab Khafra to take the lead. Gibbs finished strong, the Mustangs athlete keeping Jeremiah Hamilton at bay on the home straight. Hamilton had to settle for silver in 1:58.92, with bronze going to Jedaiah Renaud-Hinds (1:59.98). Khafra (2:00.02) faded into fourth.

Joanna Rogers outclassed her rivals in the girls' under-16 800m, the Cougars athlete getting home in 2:19.86 for a huge cushion on second-placed Aaliyah Mitchell (2:24.72).

Jerod Elcock, Judah Taylor, Corey Stewart and Jacob St Clair combined for the boys' under-20 4x100m title in 41.49 seconds. And in the 4x400m, the same Abilene quartet emerged victorious in 3:16.93
