Akili, Roberts lead Heptathlon medal hunt in Canada

T&T's Khemani Roberts and Anya Akili ended day one of their respective Heptathlons in pole position to claim gold medals at the Pan American Combined Events Cup at Terry Fox Athletic Facility in Ottawa, Canada, yesterday. In the Junior women, Roberts lead with 3191 points after the first four events, the 100m hurdles, High Jump, Shot Put and 200m.

Yesterday, she started well as she won the 110m hurdles in 15.48 seconds ahead of her two rivals, Olivia Leon (16.40) and Lauren Quann (16.59) to lead with 779 points from 666 and 644 respectively.

Roberts was much more impressive in the High Jump with a winning display of 1.74m for 903 points ahead of Quann (1.53), and Loen (1.47) who picked up 655 and 588 points respectively. In the Shot Put event, the T&T athlete also blew away her two competitors with a distance of 11.34m to pick up 618 points while Qunn (10.07) and Leon (8.23) earned 534 and 414 points respectively.

And in the 200m, Roberts raced home in 24.95 seconds for 891 points ahead of Quann (26.70) for 737 points, and Leon (27.70), 655 points. The trio will resume today with the Long Jump, Javelin Throw and 800m events left to be completed.

In the four-athletes, Youth Women's Heptathlon competition, Anya Akili leads the table with 2845 points ahead of countrywoman, Antonia Sealy (2690) followed by Zoe Carvery (2407) and Michelle Reimann (2223).

Akili started off well with victory in the 100m hurdles in 14.84 seconds for 863 points ahead of Sealey (15.19) for 817 points, and Carvery (15.72) and Reimann (17.01) for 749 and 595 points respectively.

Akili continued her winning form in the High Jump with a top height of 1.62m for which she picked up 759 points ahead of Carvery (1.56) for 689, Sealey (1.50) for 621, and Reimann with 1.41 for 523 points.

However, in the Shot Put competition, Reimann turned the table on her rivals with a top distance of 10.07m, and with it 534 points ahead of Sealey (9.51) and Akili (7.78) for which the T&T duo got 497 and 385 points respectively. Carvery was fourth with a heave of 7.39m for 360 points.

However, in the 200m Akili ended the day just as she started, with a win in 25.54 seconds for 838 points ahead of Sealey who crossed the line in 26.49 for 755 points.

Carvery was third in 28.28 and earned herself 609 points while Reimann was fourth in 28.77 for 571 points. The quartet will compete today in the Long Jump, Javelin Throw and 800m events.

T&T's Ian West is third after four events in the Junior men's Decathlon with 2807 points, while compatriot Kerlon Ashby is fifth with 2387 points with five events left, the 400m, 100m hurdles, Discus Throw, Pole Vault, Javelin Throw, and 1500m.
