Ahye adds ‘200’ record to sprint bag

Michelle-Lee Ahye's spectacular showing at the National Open Championships continued at the Hasely Crawford Stadium in Mucurapo yesterday, with the sprint star setting a new national record in adding the 200 metres title to the 100m crown she won less than 24 hours earlier.

The National Association for Athletic Administrations (NAAA) event, being sponsored by the National Gas Company (NGC) and Sagicor, saw Ahye of Rebirth again dominate her competitors, running away with a 22.33-second victory, 0.28 seconds ahead of Semoy Hackett of Zenith (22.61) on the third and final day. Third was Abilene Wildcats' Reyare Thomas in 22.72.

The trio met the Olympic qualification standard of 23.20 as well as fourth place finisher Kelly-Ann Baptiste of Zenith (22.79), fifth-placed Air Bon Sonics' Kai Selvon (22.88) and Kamaria Durant of Simplex (23.13), who finished sixth.

In the men's version of the race, Rondell Sorillo prevented 100m champion Richard Thompson from achieving the double. The La Brea sprinter sealed the victory in a time of 20.24 in a positive wind of 2.1, meeting the qualifying standard (20.50). Thompson of Rebirth clocked 20.54 and third was Concorde's Shermund Allsop in 20.67.

Machel Cedenio ran a new championship record of 44.45 to win the men's 400m. The Simplex athlete beat Nike's Lalonde Gordon into second in 44.69 and third was Deon Lendore in 45.47.

Both Cedenio and Gordon achieved the qualification standard of 45.40 in a race which saw Jarrin Solomon (Memphis) placed fourth and Zenith's Renny Quow, fifth in 46.23.

Winning the women's version of the race was Dominique Williams of Abilene in 52.65, followed by Shawna Fermin of Memphis in 53.96 and Abilene's Romona Modeste in 54.66.

Jehue Gordon was not at his best and placed second in the men's 400m hurdles final in a time of 50.44, some way off the qualification standard of 49.40. Third was Rebirth's Emmanuel Mayers in 50.49. They followed winner Puerto Rican Eric Alejandro to the in line in 50.17.

Janeil Bellille of Abilene copped the gold in the women's race in 56.11 to finish ahead of Memphis' Sparkle Mc Knight in 56.83 and Ugonna Ndu (Nigeria) in 58.46.

Keshorn Walcott of Rebirth brought the excitement on the field, claiming the top spot in the javelin throw. His fifth attempt of 80.45m won him the gold over clubmate Shakiel Waithe, who also had his best toss on his fifth try, 79.53m to get him the silver. Collecting bronze was Guyanese Leslain Baird in 67.60.

Cleopatra Borel's best effort of 17.88m earned the Rebirth field specialist the gold in the women's shot put event. Taking the silver was Toco Tafac's Portious Warren in 15.59m and the bronze went to Chelsea James of Falcons (14.85m).

Quincy Wilson of Rebirth emerged champion of the men's discus, tossing the apparatus 58.65 metres. He defeated Zenith's Emmanuel Stewart (47.81m) and Micah McNish of Striders (47.94m).

In the women's long jump, Kaizen Panthers duo Safiya John (5.51m) and Anya Akili (5.44) finished second and third respectively behind Curacao's Juliana Krishona, who won in 5.76m.

For the second straight day at the senior meet, spectators received a treat, getting a chance to relive the memorable moments of Hasely Crawford's athletic career. The NAAA's displayed a video on the big screen showing snippets of Crawford's greatness and interviews from past and present athletes honouring him.
