Walcott improves to 82 metres

Rebirth's Keshorn Walcott had his way again, claiming gold in the men's javelin event at the Falcon Games which unfolded at the Dwight Yorke Stadium in Tobago yesterday.

The reigning Olympic champion sent the javelin 82.90 metres to place above silver medal winner and club mate Shakiel Waithe (74.50m) and Precious George (UTT Fast Track), who nabbed bronze with a best try of 57.40m.

Walcott, the national champion, fouled on his first attempt but returned with the winning throw on his second toss, bettering his gold-medal winning 80.45m in the National Open Championships at the Hasely Crawford Stadium in Mucurapo, some two weeks ago.

Quincy Wilson also of Rebirth excelled on the field as well in winning the men's discus event with a best effort of 59.65m. He too bettered his throw of 58.65 which earned him the top spot on the podium at the National Championships. Second was Akeem Stewart with 53.78 and Kesean Phillips placed third with a throw of 50.10.

Quincy later picked up bronze in the men's shot put behind gold medal winner Shevorne Worrell (UTT Fast Track) with 17.55m and silver medallist Hezekiel Romeo (Rebirth) with 16.92m.

Over on the track, Mark London of Zenith crossed first in 1:55.02 in a competitive men's 800m event, just beating out Ashton Gill of Cougars, who trailed in second in a time of 1:55.16. Third was Cliffton Sylvester of Defence Force in 1:57.35.

World Junior Championships-bound Akanni Hislop of Zenith got a good warm-up for the premier event winning the men's 200m, clocking 21.41 seconds in a negative 0.1 wind, to cop gold ahead of silver medallist Kevin Haynes (Defence Force) in 21.58 and Concorde sprinter Quin-Lee Ralph, who bagged bronze in 21.60.

Crossing first in the men's 100m dash was Quin-Lee Ralph of Concorde in 10.51, followed by Abilene Wildcats's Holland Cabara (10.53) and Haysean Cowie-Clarke of Zenith (10.68), respectively.

In the women's version of the race, Jenea Spinks (Concorde) clocked 11.86 seconds to beat Ayla Stanisclaus (Zenith) into second in 12.04 and in third place was Akeera Esdelle (PFNJ) in 12.15.

Earlier, Deborah John cruised to victory in the women's 100m hurdles. The Air Bon Sonics athlete won in 13.15, beating Jeminise Parris of Memphis Pioneers (14.18) and UTT Fast Track's Kechellle Douglas (15.00) to the line.

Spinks, Esdelle and Parris will join Hislop at the recently renamed IAAF junior event World Under-20 Championships in Bydgoszcz, Poland from July 19-26.

Toco Tafac's Portious Warren was hardly troubled by her fellow competitors as she convincingly won the women's shot put event. Her final toss of 14.85 was her best in winning the gold ahead of closest challenger Chelsea James of Falcons (14.15m). Kechellle Douglas of UTT Fast Track was third with a 11.18m throw.

Warren along with Waithe, Romeo, London, Cabrera, and LaToya Guilding, who placed second in the women's discus with 42.22 behind James (44.40), will feature in next weekend's North America Central America Caribbean Association (NACAC) Under-23 Champinships in El Salvador.
