Trinidad Express :: 16.07.2016

Shakeil Waithe finished just outside the medals in the men's javelin, at the North American, Central American and Caribbean (NACAC) Under-23 Track and Field Championships, in El Salvador, yesterday. The Trinidad and Tobago athlete captured fourth spot with a 75.09 metres throw.

Curtis Thompson was the class of the nine-man field, the American landing the title with a 79.28m effort. The silver went to Mexico's David Carreon (76.25m), while bronze was bagged by Barbadian Janeil Craigg (75.62m).

T&T's Portious Warren threw the iron ball 15.31m for sixth spot in the women's shot put. American Raven Saunders was unchallenged for the title, a big 18.49m effort earning her a huge cushion on Cuban silver medallist Sahily Viart (17.42m). Another American, Erin Farmer, threw 16.43m to secure third spot.

Domonique Williams was disqualified for a false start in the women's 400m final. On Friday, the T&T quartermiler clocked 53.17 seconds to finish third in the second preliminary round heat, securing an automatic berth in the championship race.

Also on Friday, T&T's Latoya Gilding secured fifth spot in the women's discus with a 42.95m throw. And Holland Cabara finished fourth in his men's 100m semi-final in 10.60 seconds. The T&T sprinter was ninth overall in the preliminaries, and did not advance to the eight-man final.

After press time, yesterday, Ruebin Walters battled for precious metal in the men's 110m hurdles, and his T&T teammates, Nicholas Landeau and Mark London faced the starter in the men's 800m preliminaries.
