St. Fort captures bronze at U20 World Championship

Donstan Bonn :: Trinidad Express :: 21.07.2016

Trinidad and Tobago's Khalifa St Fort earned the country its first medal at the International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF) U20 World Championships 2016 in Bydgoszcz, Poland when she captured bronze in the women's 100 metres final on Thursday.

St Fort, who drew lane 5, got out the blocks well but did not pick up as quickly as she would have liked over the first 40 metres, as Candace Hill of the United States of America and Poland's Ewa Swoboda, who were on either sides of her in lanes 4 and 6, disputed the lead.

The 18-year-old sprinter held her form well to stop the clock at 11.18 seconds, but had to settle for third as Hill, in a new championship record of 11.07, and Swoboda, in 11.12, grabbed gold and silver, respectively.

Her time was just outside her personal best and new national junior record of 11.16, which she established at last month's NGC/Sagicor NAAA National Open Track and Field Championships at the Hasely Crawford Stadium in Port of Spain.

The top three were never threatened as St Fort, Hill and Swoboda recorded reaction times of 0.134, 0.136 and 0.137 seconds, respectively.

St Fort will be back in action tomorrow as she's carded to face the starter in heat 5 of the 200 metres.
