Walcott claims silver at London Anniversary Games

Newsday :: 23.07.2016

KESHORN WALCOTT continued his preparation for the defence of his Olympic javelin title with a silver-medal performance at the IAAF Diamond League (London Anniversary Games), which opened yesterday at the Olympic Stadium, London, England.

The meet will conclude today, with national women's champion Michelle-Lee Ahye and quartermiler Deon Lendore due to feature.

However, Walcott was the shining light for the TT competitors at the Anniversary Games with a throw of 83.60 metres, in his sixth and last throw, to see him jump from fifth to second spot.

Jakuk Vadlejch of the Czech Republic was the winner with a best effort of 85.72, which he achieved with his second throw.

Hamish Peacock of Australia was third with a throw of 82.94 metres, with the German trio of Johannes Vetter (82.89m), Lars Hamann (81.62m) and Julian Weber (80.29m), Zigismunds Sirmais of Latvia (79.52m) and Matti Mortimore of Great Britain (68.41m) trailing.

Ironically, the venue was the scene for Walcott's historic throw of 84.58m, which saw him become the first black, as well as first athlete from the Western Hemisphere, to capture gold in the Olympic javelin event.

Thompson, the triple Olympic silver medallist, had a rough outing at the Games, as he finished eighth in his 100 metres heat, in 10.26 seconds, and failed to advance to the final.

Jimmy Vicaut of France copped gold in 10.02, followed by the British duo of CJ Ujah and Richard Kilty, who both crossed the line in 10.16.
