Borel 6th in Brussels

Cleopatra Borel finished sixth in the women's shot put event at the IAAF Diamond League finals in Brussels, Belgium, yesterday. The Trinidad and Tobago field athlete threw the iron ball 17.59 metres.

Newly-crowned Olympic champion Michelle Carter topped the field, the American producing a 19.98m effort to finish ahead of New Zealand's Valerie Adams (19.57m) and Hungary's Anita Marton (19.11m).

The Brussels result replicated the podium finish at last month's Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. But while Carter repeated her Rio success at yesterday's Memorial van Damme meet, it was Adams who emerged as the Diamond Race winner, topping the standings with 58 points in the seven-meet competition. Marton accumulated 33 points to finish second in the Diamond Race, edging Carter (32) into third spot. Borel was sixth with 10 points.

The Memorial van Damme women's shot put was staged at the historical Grand Place, in the centre of Brussels. Revelling in the out-of-stadium atmosphere, Carter took the lead early in the competition, producing her big 19.98m effort in round two. Adams was unable to match that effort, the two-time Olympic champion's best throw coming in the sixth and final round. Marton's best also came in round six.

Borel, competing for the first time since finishing seventh at the Rio Olympics, opened yesterday at 17.07m. She threw 17.22m in round two, and then fouled her third throw. Borel managed a 17.16m effort in the fourth round, improved to 17.46m in round five, and then closed off her Memorial van Damme campaign with the 17.59m throw.
