Quow aborts Brussels run

Kwame Laurence :: Trinidad Express :: 10.09.2016

Renny Quow was a non-finisher in the men's 400 metres event, at the IAAF Diamond League finals in Brussels, Belgium, yesterday. Running in lane one, the Trinidad and Tobago quartermiler aborted his bid for honours at the Memorial van Damme meet less than 100 metres into the race.

Luguelin Santos, 22, finished strong, the Dominican Republic athlete producing a dominant run on the home straight to come away with an easy victory. The 2012 Olympic silver medallist stopped the clock at 45.02 seconds for a huge cushion on his chasing rivals.

Belgium's Jonathan Borlee led the way in the battle for silver, getting home in 45.55 to force his brothers, Dylan and Kevin into third and fourth, respectively. Twenty-three-year-old Dylan, the youngest of the Borlee siblings, clocked 45.61, while 28-year-old Kevin—Jonathan's twin brother—got home in 45.67.

Quow has had a tough time this season. His fastest 2016 run, 45.54 seconds, came in a July 13 triumph in Lignano, Italy. That clocking is more than a second slower than the 44.53 personal best he produced in the semifinal round at the 2009 IAAF World Championships in Berlin, Germany. The 2006 world junior champion went on to bag bronze in the Berlin final.

Quow finished fifth at the 2016 National Championships in 45.85 seconds, and travelled to the Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil as a member of the 4x400m relay squad. However, he was not selected in the final four. In his first post-Rio outing, in Rovereto, Italy on Tuesday, 29-year-old Quow finished third in 45.81 seconds.
