Shine 5K and 10K to help nine charities

Newsday :: 22.09.2016

NINE charitable organisations will benefit from the second annual Guardian Group SHINE 5K and 10K Charity Walk and Run Event which will start and finish at Nelson Mandela Park in St Clair, Port of Spain, on November 26, from 4 pm.

The organisations benefitting from this year's event are Couva Children's Home and Crisis Nursery, Express Children's Fund, Healing with Horses Foundation, Kids In Need of Direction, Rainbow Rescue, Just Because Foundation, Jaya Lakshmi Children's Home, Sylphil House in Love (Tobago) and The Mayor's Christmas Fund.

According to Guardian Group CEO Ravi Tewari, the company recognises that there are many under privileged children and families across Trinidad and Tobago who lack adequate financial support to maintain a minimum standard quality of life and the event's aim is to make a postive difference in lives. The acronym SHINE stands for ''Securing Hope for those in Need." Yesterday at the event's press conference held at the Guardian Group Head Office in West Moorings Tewari said the support at last year's event was fantastic.

"In 2015, approximately 3,500 people from across Trinidad and Tobago answered our call to come out and shine and help people in need. The response from runners and walkers, our staff, official partners and sponsors, charities and people just like you was overwhelming to say the least, and last December, we were able to raise over $212,000 for charities." The organisers are hoping to have 5,000 persons register to participate in this year's event.

Registration begins on Monday and closes on November 11 at a cost of $80TT or $12US. Persons are required to visit www.run- 2shine.com or www.myguardiangroup.

com to register. The 10K will begin at 4.25 pm while the 5K event will run off at 4.30 pm.

Participants will be given colourful shoelaces which can be used as an accessory during the event.

Praising Guardian Group and the event's partners and sponsors was president of Rainbow Rescue Sharon Thomas.

Thomas stated, "In 2015, as a result of your generous donation of $25,000 we were able to outfit children with school uniforms and books for the start of the new school year and we were also able to carry out some much needed renovations and repainting of our new study room, which now facilitates extra lessons and serves as a homework area." The Shine 2016 partners are One Caribbean Media Group Limited, C&W Business and Oasis purified premium water..
