Cedenio guides ‘Pres’ students on Career Day

Newsday :: 07.10.2016

Diligence, focus and determination - these were the habits that Olympic 400m fourth-place finisher, Machel Cedenio, told students assisted in his reaching the 2016 Rio Olympics and achieving his overall goals.

Cedenio, a Flow Brand Ambassador, visited his alma mater, Presentation College, San Fernando for the Annual Career Day on Wednesday where he interacted with current students.

Cedenio shot to international stardom a couple months ago, breaking a 24-year-old national record held by Ian Morris, when he placed fourth in a historic 400m final at the Olympics in a stunning time of 44.01 seconds. He trailed South African Wayde Van Niekerk who broke the Olympic and world record in an astonishing 43.03 seconds, 2012 London Games champ Kirani James (43.76) and American LaShawn Merritt (43.85).

Speaking to a packed classroom with other Presentation College past students about sports-related careers, Cedenio, a World Junior champion, shared details of how he made the decision to be a track and field athlete and who inspired him.

He also talked about the fact that his success is not his alone, but the hard work of an entire team who ensures that he is healthy, fit and at the top of his game. Machel joined other successful past students of Presentation College, like Faris Al Rawi, Attorney General for the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago; Clarence Rambharat, Minister of Agriculture and Dr Barry Copeland, holder of the Order of Trinidad and Tobago and Pro- Vice Chancellor of the University of the West Indies, who shared their experiences to assist students from the College and other secondary schools in San Fernando and South Trinidad in deciding on their career goals.
