George snatches World Masters discus bronze

Kwame Laurence :: Trinidad Express :: 01.11.2016

Geraldine George added World Masters Track and Field Championship women's 40-44 discus bronze to her javelin silver, in Perth, Australia, yesterday.

George's bronze took the Trinidad and Tobago tally to five—two gold medals, two silver, one bronze.

Marsha Mark-Baird earned gold in the women's 40-44 heptathlon and javelin events, while Dwayne Caines picked up men's 35-39 100 metres silver.

Going into the sixth and final round of yesterday's discus event, George was in fifth spot. But the 44-year-old T&T thrower saved her best for last, throwing 39.38 metres to leapfrog Poland's Klaudia Sieklinska (39.33m) and Great Britain's Andrea Jenkins (38.52m).

German Bettina Schardt was the class of the field, grabbing gold with a huge 44.06m effort.

Silver, meanwhile, went to American Elizabeth Teague (39.76m).
