Another medal for George - Secures shot put silver at World Masters

Kwame Laurence :: Trinidad Express :: 02.11.2016

Trinidad and Tobago's Geraldine George threw the iron ball 11.31 metres in Perth, Australia, yesterday, to secure her third podium finish at the 2016 World Masters Track and Field Championships. George captured silver in the women's 40-44 shot put, adding to her javelin silver and discus bronze.

Belarus thrower, Vera Yepimashka was dominant in yesterday's shot put, claiming gold with a big 14.20m effort. Bronze was bagged by Finland's Kirsi Koro (10.71m).

George opened the competition with a 10.60m throw, the first round effort putting her in second spot, behind Yepimashka. In round two, however, George fouled, and slipped to third while Koro produced the first of two 10.71m throws to move ahead of the T&T athlete.

A 10.36m effort in the third round meant that George remained in third spot. But her impressive 11.31m fourth round throw pushed the 44-year-old back up to second. She followed up with a 10.60m effort, and then closed off at 10.53m. Koro, meanwhile, was unable to get into 11-metre territory, and George ended her World Masters campaign with silver medal number two.

The T&T World Masters haul now stands at six—two gold medals, three silver and one bronze. Marsha Mark-Baird earned the two golds, while the other silver medal was bagged by Dwayne Caines.

Tonight (TT time), Mark-Baird will chase a third medal in the women's 40-44 80 metres hurdles final. Yesterday's qualifying round was cancelled. On Saturday, Mark-Baird will compete for precious metal in the long jump event.
