Stadium warm up track reopens

Trinidad Express :: 24.11.2016

Sports Minister Darryl Smith will commission the newly refurbished warm-up track at the Hasely Crawford Stadium in Port of Spain at a ceremony on Thursday (Nov 24) at 3.30 p.m.

The track has been declared ready for use and both track and field athletes will have a surface similar to the main track to train on. The strips for the long jump and javelin have been fixed while repairs were made to the throwing circle.

Ephraim Serrette, president of the National Association of Athletics Administrations (NAAA) and Trinidad and Tobago Football Association (TTFA) president David John-Williams, as well as several elite national athletes are expected to attend. Several track club members will test the capacity of the surfaces in various disciplines.

Smith said, "The works at the warm-up track have been a priority as we are keen to satisfy the needs of our athletes, at all levels. We hope the track, and the field for football and other sports, will enjoy optimal usage throughout its life cycle. Our primary motive is to assist the athlete and the upgrade of the track is one of the ways we are delivering on that promise."

Additionally, late afternoon and evening training sessions can now be accommodated at the Hasely Crawford track as, in partnership with the Trinidad and Tobago Electricity Commission (T&TEC), the outfield and track will be lit. Public Utilities Minister Fitzgerald Hinds as well as executives of the electricity commission will be on hand for a ceremonial shovel turning.

The upgrade works, managed by the Sports Company of Trinidad & Tobago, were completed in just over three weeks and were conducted by local contractor Advance Performance Technologies and overseen by German firm Porplastic, which also installed the main track at the Hasely Crawford Stadium.
