Port of Spain: Machel Cedenio, the TV6 Viewers' Choice Sport Personality of the Year for 2016, has set his sights on going under the 44-second mark as he gears up for IAAF World Championships in London next August.

Cedenio won the accolade ahead of fellow nominees Keshorn Walcott, Anisa Mohammed, Michelle-Lee Ahye, Akeem Stewart and Nyoshia Cain.

The TV6 Sports team presented the nominees and fans got the opportunity to choose the winner by voting via text messaging. This was the ninth edition of the competition. Sprinter Richard Thompson capturing the inaugural title in 2008, edging out cricketer Daren Ganga, who rebounded to win it in 2009. Boxer Tariq Haqq won the accolade in 2010, with drag racer Sheldon Bissessar taking the title in 2011.

George Bovell took the 2012 crown with Jehue Gordon topping the podium in 2013. Bovell became the first two-time winner in 2014 and last year (2015) para-athlete Akeem Stewart took the top honour.
