MICHELLE-LEE Ahye and Keshorn Walcott won the top senior awards when the National Association of Athletics Administrations (NAAA's) Awards 2016 was held at the Radisson Hotel in Port-of- Spain, yesterday.

Ahye, who competed in the finals of the women's 100-metre, women's 200m and women's 4x100m events at the 2016 Rio Olympics won the Senior Female Athlete of the Year Award.

Walcott, who was not in attendance, copped the Senior Male Athlete of the Year Award.

Walcott was Trinidad and Tobago's only medallist at the Rio Olympics winning bronze in the men's javelin event. The bronze medal followed up his gold medal performance at the 2012 London Olympics in the same event.

Winning the top awards in the junior category were Akanni Hislop and Khalifa St Fort.

Hislop, who could not attend, took home the Junior Male Athlete of the Year award, while St Fort took Junior Female Athlete of the Year honours. Hislop won gold in the Boys Under-20 200m event at the 2016 Carifta Games, while St Fort snatched bronze in the Girls 100m event at the World Junior Championships.

Ahye was happy to win the award saying, "it is a very proud moment for me, I did really good last year and (receiving) these awards means a lot to me and it encourages me more to push harder for the season upcoming." Asked if she was amazed by her performances last year Ahye said, "yes I am really amazed, even though we did not do really good in the (women's) 4x100m we still tried our best." The top sprinter said her health is important in 2017. "I just (want) to remain healthy, I just came off surgery from my toe. I am just trying to stay healthy and try to do better than I did last year." Among those in attendance at the awards were President of Trinidad and Tobago Anthony Carmona, NAAA's president Ephraim Serrette, TT Olympic Committee president Brian Lewis, Minister of Sport and Youth Affairs Darryl Smith and SporTT chairman Micheal Phillips. President Carmona delivered the feature address at the ceremony.
