TTOC to push female athletes

Trinidad Express :: 14.01.2017

The Trinidad and Tobago Olympic Committee is set to launch its "Future is Female" programme, an initiative focused on assisting the country's female athletes to break the Olympic medal drought. It will be a focused element of the #10golds24 Athlete Welfare and Preparation fund.

After 70 years of TTOC and TT Olympic history, Trinidad and Tobago is yet to have a female Olympic medallist.

"And it isn't because of a lack of talent or strong mind or a burning desire for success on the part of the athletes," TTOC president Brian Lewis said. "The future is female. #futureisfemale making a difference changing the game,"

The TT Commonwealth Games Association and TT Beach and Sand Games Association president said that in the context of women and Olympic sport, T&T will be left behind if they do not up their game.

"There are certain aspects related to women that must be incorporated in respect of long-term female athlete development.

As part of 10 or more Olympic gold medals by 2024, the TTOC must address the issues and provide solutions and options.

That's the objective of the Future is Female initiative," Lewis said. "Doing what needs to be done to give our female athletes the help they need to translate and elevate their talent to the Olympic podium."

Lewis added there are specific issues and problems that cannot be ignored or denied any longer.

"The reality is, after 70 years of TTOC and TT Olympic history, Trinidad and Tobago is yet to have a female Olympic medallist... You have to want it so badly that nothing else matters. To represent your country you have to want it even more. You have to have a strong mind. Olympic and elite level sport is about constant improvement otherwise you will be left behind," Lewis concluded.
