Sorrillo clocks 20.49 in Arkansas

Rondel Sorrillo and Alena Brooks produced impressive performances at the Tyson Invitational indoor track and field meet in Arkansas, USA, on the weekend.

Sorrillo clocked an indoor best 20.49 seconds to claim silver in the men's invitational 200 metres event. The Trinidad and Tobago sprinter finished just behind American Just'N Thymes, who moved to the top of the 2017 world indoor performance list with a 20.47 run. Great Britain's Nethaneel Mitchell-Blake was third in 20.49, losing to Sorrillo in a photo finish.

Sorrillo is joint-second on the 2017 list with another T&T athlete, Lalonde Gordon, Mitchell-Blake and American Christian Coleman. Sorrillo and Gordon are also joint-second all-time among T&T athletes, behind national indoor record holder Ato Boldon (20.35).

Sorrillo and Gordon share fourth spot on the all-time Central American and Caribbean (CAC) indoor list. Barbadian Obadele Thompson is first at 20.26, ahead of Boldon, with Cuban Ivan Garcia rounding off the top three.

Brooks returned a time of two minutes, 05.12 seconds to win the women's invitational 800m event. Her T&T teammate, Sparkle McKnight bagged bronze in the Olympic Development women's 400m in 52.65 seconds.

University of Kentucky student, Kayelle Clarke was 16th overall in the women's 200m in 24.02 seconds and 37th in the 60m dash in 7.67. University of Missouri sophomore Tsai-Anne Joseph finished 45th in the 60m in 7.84. And in the women's 400m, South Plains College athlete Mauricia Prieto was 40th fastest in 56.76.

In Arizona, Jeminise Parris clocked a personal best 8.74 seconds for gold in the Arizona Indoor Invitational women's 60m hurdles. She earned silver in the 200m in 24.94. Parris' Central Arizona College teammate, Portious Warren won the women's shot put with a 15.81 metres effort.

At the Adams State University NCAA Qualifier, in Colorado, Adams State sprinter Micah Ballantyne topped the men's 60m field in 6.77 seconds.

In Alabama, Chelsea Charles emerged victorious in the Samford Open women's 200m in 24.26 seconds. The University of Arkansas at Little Rock senior was second fastest in the 60m in 7.55. Tennessee Technological University freshman Lisa Wickham was eighth in 7.70. In the preliminary round, Charles clocked 7.62, while Wickham got to the line in 7.66.

At the Tiger Paw Invitational, in South Carolina, Ruebin Walters claimed men's 60m hurdles bronze in 7.78 seconds. His University of Alabama teammate, Domonique Williams clocked 53.04 for bronze in the women's 400m.
