Trinidad Express :: 13.02.2017

Akidah Briggs of Toco Secondary and Camille Lewis from Sangre Grande Secondary captured four titles each at the recent North East Secondary Schools Track and Field Zonal Championships.

Briggs won the girls Over-18 shot put (12.30m), discus (30.72m) and javelin (38.99m) and the Girls Open hammer (25.96m) to sweep all the throws at the field events day on Thursday, February 2 at the Toco Secondary School Grounds at Galera Road, Toco.

The five-time Carifta and CAC Junior shot and javelin medallist was impressive in the javelin, missing the qualifying standard for the Carifta girls Under-20 discipline (39.00) by one centimetre. The 2012 National Secondary Schools Championships top female athlete also ran the lead-off leg on the Toco girls Over-18 4x100m team which copped silver at the track events on February 1.

Lewis showed her versatility by winning the girls Under-18 800m (two minutes, 41.19 seconds), 1500m (5:53.66), high jump (1.30m) and javelin (19.18m).

Gonzales sped to victories in the Boys Under-14 100m (13.24), 400m (one minute, 03.67 seconds) and long jump (4.40m).

However, in the 200m, he secured bronze (27.21).

Thom was crowned champion in the Girls Over-18 long jump (4.88m), high jump (1.40m) and the Girls Open triple jump (11.02m).

Jaheim Hector (Sangre Grande Secondary), Mishak Peters (Adonis Academy Private) and Jeremiah Hamilton (Toco Sec) were double winners who narrowly missed out on three titles, while Carifta medallist Tyrell Edwards (Boys Over-18 100m-11.18/200m-22.38) headed the list of other Toco Secondary athletes who won two gold medals. The others included Jada James, Jusoyna Fifi and Otis Barker.

Other double champions were: Mercedes Solarzano of Arima Central Secondary, Tyrese Bernard of Holy Cross, Arima North Secondary's Aril Hackshaw and Jamaal Alexander of Matelot Community College.

Toco dominated the relays, securing five of the six 4x400m races.
