Callender 2nd in Jamaica 400m run

T&T's Emmanuel Callender performed impressively on Saturday, to finish second in the men's 400 metres at the Camperdown Classic at the Jamaica National Stadium in Kingston.

Callender ran a new personal best in the event, clocking 46.85 seconds, the same as Jamaica's 400m specialist Annsert Whyte, to finish behind Zharnel Hughes of Great Britain, who won in a time of 46.58. Jamaica's 100m. World champion Yohan Blake made a disappointing seasonal debut and struggled to fifth place in 47.3.

After the race, Callender, a two-time Olympic medallist, posted on his facebook page saying: "Big God, thank you for the new personal best in the 400m again today (46:85 ). I do all things through Christ who strengthens me. From lane 8 again, all red."

The local sprinter was referring to his 400m win in a previous personal best of 47.74 at the Queen's Grace Jackson Invitational meet in Jamaica on January 28.

Also shining on the weekend were local quartermiler Alena Brooks and sprinter Rondell Sorrillo and , who both competed at the Tyson Invitational at the Arkansas-Randall Tyson Track in Fayetteville, Arizona.

Brooks lined-up in the women's 800m invitational and clocked 2:05.12 to comfortably win the two-lap race while Sorrillo faced the starter in the men's 200m invitational and crossed in 20.49 to place second.

Another T&T quartermiler Sparkle McKnight also participated at the event and she won heat one in a time of 52.65, to place third overall in the 400m Olympic development race.

Kayelle Clarke, a junior at the University of Kentucky, was 16th overall in the women's 200m in 24.02 and 37th in the 60m in 7.67. Mauricia Prieto of South Plains College had the 40th quickest time in 56.76 in the 400m and Tsai-Anne Joseph, a University of Missouri sophomore, time of 7.84 placed her 45th in the 60m.

Also on the US college scene, Central Arizona freshman Jeminise Parris picked up two medals at the Arizona Indoor Invitational in Coolidge, registering a personal best 8.74 to also nab gold in the women's 60m hurdles and s silver in the 200m in 24.94.

Her schoolmate Portious Warren, a sophomore, was the best in the women's shot put event. Her throw of 15.81m won her gold as well.

Peli Alzola certainly had a full schedule of event at the Music City Challenge at the Vanderbilt-Multipurpose Facility in Nashville, Tennessee. The Western Kentucky senior was second in heat two of the women's 60m dash. Her time of 7.66 placed her 15th overall.

Alzola was third in heat three in the 200m in 24.89, to have the 19th quickest time and later she was part of the Western Kentucky (B) team that placed 10th overall after crossing second in the third heat in 3:46.65

Bemidji State freshman, Jada Barker, lined up in two events at the SDSU Indoor Classic at Sanford-Jackrabbit Athletic Complex in Brookings, San Diego. She placed second in heat nine in the women's 200m to place 24th overall in 25.85 while her time of 7.99 placed her 25th after finishing third in heat five.

In South Carolina at the Tiger Paw Invitational, both University of Alabama students Ruebin Walters and Domonique Williams bagged bronze medals. Walters success came in the men's 60m hurdles crossing in 7.78 while Williams was third in the women's 400m in 53.04.

Sprinter Micah Ballantyne did his Adams State University team proud, winning the men's 60m dash in 6.77, when his school hosted the NCAA Qualifier, in Colorado.
