Huge throw for Horsford

…may not be recognised as T&T record

Tyriq Horsford threw further than his Trinidad and Tobago boys' under-18 javelin record at the National Association of Athletics Administrations (NAAA) Development Meet #8, held at the Dwight Yorke Stadium in Bacolet, Tobago, on Sunday. However, the huge 73.17 metres effort may not be recognised as a new national record.

NAAA president Ephraim Serrette told the Express, yesterday, that he had been informed that the proper record verification procedure was not adhered to, including re-measurement of the throw with a steel tape.

"We're awaiting the report from the technical officials in Tobago. When we get that, we can say firmly what the position is.

"The report," Serrette explained, "would go to the records committee, which I chair, who will then inform the NAAA board. From all indications, it may not be recognised, which is sad. But the throw is a good signal from Tyriq."

Horsford, a member of the Zenith (Tobago) Athletic Club, established the existing T&T under-18 record at the 2016 Carifta Games, in Grenada, throwing 73.00m to retain the regional title. The big throw was also a Games record. The 17-year-old thrower will bid for a hat-trick of Carifta titles at the 2017 edition of the meet, scheduled for April 15-17 in Curacao.

Janae De Gannes was also among the standouts at the Yorke Stadium on Sunday. The Zenith athlete won the girls' under-12 80 metres dash in 10.96 seconds and the 200m in 29.29. There was victory too for De Gannes in the girls' under-14 long jump, the talented youngster producing a 4.37m leap.
