RICHARDS ON FIRE!

...grabs SEC 200 gold in 20.34

Jereem Richards was on fire at the Southeastern Conference (SEC) Indoor Track and Field Championships, held at the Vanderbilt Multipurpose Facility in Tennessee, USA, yesterday. The University of Alabama student produced a blistering 20.34 seconds run to grab gold in the men's 200 metres finals.

Richards' clocking is faster than the 20.35 national indoor record established by Ato Boldon in 1997, but will not be recognised as a new Trinidad and Tobago standard and the 2017 world-leading time since the Vanderbilt track is oversized.

In the preliminary round, 23-year-old Richards clocked 20.70 seconds to lead all qualifiers into the eight-man finals. Louisiana State University freshmen, Akanni Hislop and Xavier Mulugata were 16th and 28th, respectively. Hislop got to the line in 21.37, while Mulugata produced a 22.28 run. University of Missouri junior Jonathan Holder clocked 22.50 for 31st spot.

Ruebin Walters finished fifth in the men's 60m hurdles final in 7.78 seconds. The Alabama junior had clocked a personal best 7.72 in the qualifying round. Alabama senior Domonique Williams was 12th overall in the women's 400m in 53.96 seconds. And in the men's 60m dash, Hislop and Holder were 19th and 26th, respectively, clocking 6.90 and 7.07.

At the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference (RMAC) Championships, in South Dakota, Adams State University junior Micah Ballantyne struck gold in the men's 60m dash in 6.84 seconds. In the 200m, he was ninth overall in 22.62.

In Illinois, Lisa Wickham finished fifth in the Ohio Valley Conference (OVC) Championship women's 60m final in 7.65 seconds. The Tennessee Technological University freshman produced a 7.60 run in the preliminaries.

Last Tuesday, Chelsea Charles captured two silver medals at the Sun Belt Championships, in Alabama. The University of Arkansas at Little Rock student finished second in the women's 400m finals in a personal best 53.92 seconds. She also produced a personal best in the 200m finals, claiming second spot in 23.97. Charles' 400 and 200 clockings were school records.

At the Southland Conference Championships, in Alabama, Sterlen Paul was 10th fastest in the men's 800 metres in one minute, 54.57 seconds. His Abilene Christian University teammate, Jessica King was 20th in the women's 200m in 25.36 seconds.

In Minnesota, Bemidji State University freshman Jada Barker clocked 26.06 for 18th spot overall in the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference Championship women's 200m event. At the Atlantic Coast Conference Championships, in Indiana, University of Miami sophomore Breon Mullings was 21st in the men's 200m in 21.88.

In Georgia, at the Savannah State Eyeopener outdoor meet, Claflin University's Odou Hazel finished 10th overall in the men's 800m in 2:02.21.

Last weekend, in New York, Lalonde Gordon won the Ocean Breeze Grand Prix indoor meet men's 300m event in a fast 32.47 seconds. Andre Marcano clocked 6.85 for third spot in the men's 60m dash.

At the Arkansas Qualifier, Sparkle McKnight was second fastest in the women's 200m in 23.71 seconds. McKnight was also second best on the day in the 400m, getting home in 53.21. Alena Brooks finished second in the women's 800m in 2:05.57.

And at the Arizona Tune Up meet, Jamol James clocked 6.69 seconds to finish fifth in the men's 60m final.
