Denoon and Warren golden at NJCAA Indoor Champs

Trinidad and Tobago athletes, Zakiya Denoon and Portious Warren have retained their National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Indoor Track and Field Championship titles, in Kansas, USA.

Yesterday, Denoon repeated as women's 200 metres champion, the Monroe College sophomore stopping the clock at a personal best 23.57 seconds to capture top spot in the finals. In the preliminary round, Denoon (24.10), Central Arizona College freshman Jeminise Parris (24.93) and Neosho County Community College's Shania Alexander (25.00) were first, 18th and 20th, respectively. The 10 fastest sprinters advanced to the finals.

Denoon also produced a podium finish in the women's 60m dash. She bagged bronze in 7.38 seconds. Denoon was the 2016 NJCAA champion. Denoon was third fastest in the preliminaries in 7.40 seconds, while Alexander clocked 7.77 for 24th spot overall.

Warren, a sophomore at Central Arizona College, kept her women's shot put title, on Friday. Her best throw on the day was 16.14m. In the weight throw, Warren was fifth with a 17.22m effort.

South Plains College sophomore Mauricia Prieto finished ninth in the women's 400m finals in 57.17 seconds. Prieto was ninth in the qualifying round in 55.91.

Dawnel Collymore returned a time of two minutes, 16.85 seconds for fifth spot in the women's 800m final. The Monroe College student was faster in the preliminary round, getting home in 2:16.27. She also competed in the 1,000m, finishing 11th overall in 3:03.75.

Parris was disqualified from the women's 60m hurdles preliminaries for a false start.

Prieto earned women's 4x400m silver as part of the South Plains team. Prieto and her teammates combined for a 3:40.33 clocking. Central Arizona (Parris), Monroe (Denoon) and Neosho (Alexander) finished fifth, ninth and 14th, respectively, clocking 3:45.85, 3:49.57 and 3:59.30.

Prieto's South Plains accumulated 73 points to finish third in the women's team competition, behind New Mexico, the winners with 121 points, and Iowa Central (116). Central Arizona (39) and Monroe (28) were fifth and ninth, respectively.
