Champs Bishops take Day 1 honours

Reigning champions Bishops High begin its quest to regain the overall title by leading the standings at the end of the first day of action at the 2017 Tobago Zonal Secondary Schools Athletic Championships at the Dwight Yorke, Stadium, Bacolet, Tobago. John-Mark Walters led the way for Bishops capturing two of the 21 gold medals won by his school.

Walters secured the boys under 16 400m and 1500m titles. Bishops dominated the sprint hurdles claiming four of the five races contested as Kayda Parris (girls under 16 100m hurdles), Che Saunders (boys under 16 100m hurdles), Kelsey Daniels (boys under 18 110m hurdles) and Ako Hislop (boys over 18 110m hurdles) were winners.

Bishops won five of the eight 400m gold medals with Areitas De Freitas (girls under 14), Israel Daly (boys under 14), Shanika Belfon (girls under 16) and Dwight St. Hillaire (boys over 18) joining Walters as one lap champions.

Walters also of Bishops athletes to secures victories in 1500m races. Abrelle Baynes (girls under 16) and Jadiael Walters (boys over 18) were the other victors in the metric mile. Bishops ended the day with half of eight 4x100m triumphs (boys under 14, girls under 16, boys under 16 and girls over 18) to amass 45 medals (21, 12 silver and 12 bronze). The line up teams behind Bishops may have caused a surprised as Mason Hall Sec 19 (7, 6, 6), Roxborough Sec 16 (6, 3, 7) and Speyside Sec 12 (6, 3, 3) were ahead of Scarborough Sec 31 (5, 12, 14) and Signal Hill Sec 23 (5, 11, 7),

Mason Hall Sec's (Keshaun Bobb (boys under 18), Kershel Pierre (girls over 18) and Giovanni Elder (boys over 18) won long jump gold while Keavon Mc Kenna (boys under 14) and Savion Joseph (boys under 16) sprint away with 100m titles. Shadae Pierre (girls under 14) and Sherinicah Seargeant (girls under 16) upset the back to race to 100m wins. Pierre then anchored Roxborough Sec's girls 4x100m team to victory. Speyside High's Carifta-bound Konnel Jacob dominated the boys over shot put and discus with Carifta qualifying distances. Jonathan Baker took the boys under over 18 100m for Scarborough Sec and then helped the boys over 18 4x100m to victory.

Carifta prospects Kymoi Noray (girls under 18 javelin) and Jy'll Roberts (boys under 18 1500m) secured wins for Signal Hill Secondary.

Diamond Payne produced a strong finish to take the boys under 18 100m and then helped the boys under 18 4x100m team to success. Shakira Kerr (girls under 16 shot put), Christopher Crawford (boys under 18 shot put) and Veyon Joseph (boys under 16 javelin) were champions for Pentecostal Light and Life.
