Parris gets golden track double

Jeminise Parris' Collegiate athletic career continues to thrive in the United States of America, as the T&T hurdler struck gold twice at the Puma Outdoor Invitational/Distance in the Dark meet at Paradise Valley Community College in Phoenix, Arizona, on the weekend.

Parris, a Central Arizona College freshman, first climbed to the top of the podium in the women's 100 metres after clocking 12.08 seconds and then dominated the 400m hurdles, crossing in 1:03.39. The local runner and her teammates later raced the clock to finish in 46.66 in the 4x100m relay event.

Another Central Arizona student, Portious Warren, also had success at the event, grabbing gold in the women's shot put with a 16.25m throw. Warren competed in two other events, placing fifth in the hammer throw with a best effort of 42.82m and in the discus throw, the 20-year-old Sophomore produced a 33.80m effort to place 10th.

On Saturday, T&T had a number of athletes participating at the Bobby Lane Invitational at the Maverick Stadium in Arlington, Texas, including Chelsea Anika Charles of the University of Arkansas-Little Rock and Wiley College trio Moriba Morain, Quinn-Lee Ralph and Kendell Perouza.

Charles broke her school's outdoor record in the 200m, clocking 23.80 with a minus wind to place third overall. In the 100m, she ran 11.72 in a minus wind also to place seventh overall and the University of Arkansas-Little Rock senior helped anchor her team in the 4x400 to take third place overall with a split time of 53.50.

Morain, a junior, faced the starter in the men's 200m and bagged a bronze in 20.94. He also lined up in the 100m dash along with Ralph, a senior at Wiley, but neither could finish among the medals. Morain was fifth in a time of 10.59 and Ralph's 10.68 placed him 11th.

Perouza, senior student/athlete as well, raced in the men's 400m hurdles and he was 12th overall in 1:00.33 after finishing fifth in heat two.

Staying in the state of Texas, in El Paso at the UTEP Springtime, Mauricia Prieto struck gold in the 200m in 23.84 and linked with her South Plains teammates to cross fifth in the 4x100m in 48.40.

In Columbia, South Carolina, at Weems Baskin Invitational, Monroe College sprinter Zakiya Denoon, who was named the Atlantic Region Track Athlete of the Year by the USTFCCCA and NJCAA earlier this month, dominated the field in the women's 100m, winning in a time of 11.48.

Denoon, a sophomore from Belle Garden in Tobago, also bagged a bronze in the 200m in 23.45. Crossing first in that event was American Candace Hill, the women's 100m IAAF World U20 champion, in 22.72. Coppin State University's Khemani Roberts also took part in the event and her time of 25.15, placed her 37th among the 83 competitors.

Roberts had a full schedule this weekend competing at two meets. On Friday, the sophomore placed eighth in the long jump with a best leap of 5.46m and 14th in the javelin throw (21.26) at the Weems meet.

The following day, she raced with Coppin State's 4x400m relay team at the 16th annual Goucher College Track and Field Classic in Baltimore, Maryland and the unit placed third in 4:15.76.

Coppin State senior Haysean Cowie-Clarke was seventh in the men's 100m in 10.53, 29th in the 200m (21.85) and his 4x100 relay team was fourth in 40.19. His schoolmate Mark London, a junior, placed ninth in the opening heat in 4:08.44 to finish with the 20th fastest time.

Another Monroe College athlete Dawnel Collymore also competed in two events, placing 28th (4:59.69) in the 1,500m and then copped a silver as part of Monroe College 4x800m relay team (9:13.82).
