Hackett tops 200 ‘B’ at Grenada Invitationa

Semoy Hackett topped the women's 200 metres "B" race at the Kirani James Stadium in St George's, Grenada, late on Saturday, for the best Trinidad and Tobago performance at the inaugural Grenada Invitational track and field meet.

Hackett stopped the clock at 23.26 seconds to finish just ahead of American Olivia Ekpone, the runner-up in 23.28. Another American, Cierra White (23.44) was third. The other T&T sprinter in the race, Reyare Thomas clocked 24.06 for sixth spot. American Felicia Brown won the international women's 200m in 22.60, with fourth spot going to Jamaica's two-time Olympic half-lap champion Veronica Campbell-Brown (22.93).

T&T's Renny Quow produced a 46.01 seconds run for bronze in the men's 400m "B" race. Bahamian Steven Gardiner was on fire, winning the event in a world-leading 44.26. The clocking is also a new Bahamas national record. American Najee Glass finished a distant second in 45.70.

Grenadian hero Kirani James won the international men's 400m, the 2012 Olympic champion getting home in 45.44 seconds. T&T's Jarrin Solomon clocked 47.04 for fifth spot. Another T&T athlete, Shakeil Waithe threw 73.22 metres to finish fourth in the international men's javelin. Janeil Craigg topped the field with a 78.71m effort, a new Barbados national record.

Emmanuel Callender secured fourth spot in the international men's 100m dash, the T&T sprinter getting to the line in 10.27 seconds. American Mike Rodgers won in 10.17, while evergreen St Kitts and Nevis athlete Kim Collins was fifth in 10.28. The 100m "B" race, meanwhile, was won by Jamaica's Asafa Powell (10.18). T&T's Michelle-Lee Ahye crossed the line in a wind-assisted 11.26 seconds to finish fifth in the international women's 100m dash. Ivory Coast sprinter Murielle Ahoure struck gold in 11.14.

Sparkle McKnight finished fourth in the international women's 400m hurdles, the T&T athlete getting home in 58.25 seconds. American Ashley Spencer was the winner in 54.78. T&T's Samantha Shukla returned a time of 10 minutes, 53.56 seconds for fourth spot in the international women's 3,000m. Panama's Rolanda Bell won easily in 9:46.60.

In the international women's high jump, T&T's Deandra Daniel went over the bar at 1.73m to finish sixth. Levern Spencer was the class of the field, the St Lucia athlete claiming gold with a 1.88m clearance.

And American LaShawn Merritt was golden in the international men's 200m event in 20.42 seconds
