Charles snares Arkansas sprint double

T&T's Anika Charles ruled the track, completing a sprint double at the Little Rock Open in Arkansas, USA, to lead some outstanding performances from local athletes on the US College track and field circuit.

The Arkansas-Little Rock University senior athlete stopped the clock at 11.56 seconds to claim gold in the women's 100 metres and then followed up with a winning time of 23.58 to cross first in the 200m contest.

Mauricia Prieto, a sophomore at South Plains, had success also at the Angelo State David Noble Relays in San Angelo, Texas, winning the women's 100m dash in 11.44. This after clocking the fastest qualifying time of 11.59 in the preliminary heats.

Prieto also picked up gold in the 4x100m relay when her South Plains A team won in 45.68.

Also competing in the state of Texas in Nacogdoches at the Skechers Performance Carl Kight Invitational at Stephen F Austin Stadium was Kendell Perouza, who placed 15th in the men's 400m hurdles in 59.70. The Wiley College senior was 23rd in the men's 400m in 53.12.

Western Kentucky University (WKU) senior Peli Alzola starred at the WKU Hilltopper Relays in Bowling Green, Kentucky winning four medals— a gold, a silver and two bronzes.

Alzola was part of the 4x100m relay team that was first in 45.47 and then crossed second with her Western Kentucky unit in 3:43.47 in the 4x400m race. The senior student athlete also was third in both the women's 100m (12.04) and 200m (24.22).

At the Delaware Open in Newark, Zakiya Denoon of Monroe College won heat seven in 57.93 and registered the fastest time of all the heats to cop gold in the women's 400m. Her teammate Dawnel Collymore competed in heat six and was fourth with her time of 1:00.48, placing her 13th overall.

Collymore also ventured over to the Sam Howell Invitatitional in Princeton, New York, where the Monroe College freshman raced in the women's 800m and placed third in 2:15.64.

Denoon later got another medal when her Monroe team clocked 4:06.99 to place third in the 4x400m relay.

Khemani Roberts was also in action at the Delaware meet and she shined in one of three events, she competed in. The Coppin State sophomore nabbed gold in the women's high jump event with a best leap of 1.70m, was fifth in the 100m hurdles event in 14.98 and eighth in the long jump, with her best attempt, measuring 5.17m.

In Fairfax, Virginia, at the George Mason Spring Invitational, more Coppin State athletes were active including Haysean Cowie-Clarke in two events and Mark London one.

Cowie-Clarke, a senior, was ninth in 10.87 seconds in the 100m dash and 15th in the half-lap in 21.99 while London's time of 4:03.59, placed him 67th in the 1,500m.

In the Rafer/JJK Invitational at UCLA in Los Angeles, California, Central Arizona sophomore Portious Warren just missed out on a medal, placing fourth in the women's shot put with a best toss of 13.91m. She also competed in the discus and was 10th with a 44.14m throw.

Her schoolmate Jeminise Parris also missed out on a podium finish, clocking 13.91 to place fourth in the women's 100 hurdles but did get some success as part of the Central Arizona 4x100 and 4x400m relay teams crossing first in both races in 46.22 and 3:44.30, respectively.

And at the Louisiana State University (LSU) Battle on the Bayou at Bernie Moore Track Stadium in Baton Rouge, LSU sprint duo freshmen Akanni Hislop and Xavier Mulugata faced the starter in the men's 100m and 200m events.

Hislop was fourth in 10.71 in the 100m while Mulugata's time of 10.89 placed him ninth. In the other race, again Hislop finished ahead of Mulugata, placing fifth in 21.14 and the other T&T runner was 16th (22.09).
