T&T in medal hunt

Kwame Laurence :: Trinidad Express :: 21.04.2017

Trinidad and Tobago will have the opportunity to earn two medals on day one of the IAAF World Relays in Nassau, Bahamas, tonight. But first, the women's 4x200 metres and men's 4x100m teams must successfully negotiate their heats.

The qualifying round of the women's 4x2 event is scheduled to start at 7.35 p.m., with the final taking place at 10.21. The T&T quartet will be chosen from triple Olympic finalist Michelle-Lee Ahye, Semoy Hackett, Reyare Thomas, Kai Selvon, Kamaria Durant and Chelsea Charles.

The men's 4x100m team will be built around double Olympic medallists Keston Bledman and Emmanuel Callender.

The other members of the squad are Kyle Greaux, Dan-Neil Telesford and Moriba Morain. The first men's 4x100m heat will be contested at 7.59 p.m. The final is at 10.36.

The T&T sprint relay men will miss the experience of triple Olympic medallist Richard "Torpedo" Thompson, who is unavailable, and veteran sprinter Marc Burns. Also missing from the squad is the injured Rondel Sorrillo.

T&T will be at full strength, however, in the men's 4x400m relay. Machel Cedenio, Lalonde Gordon, Deon Lendore, Jarrin Solomon, Renny Quow and Jereem Richards have all medalled globally in the 4x4, and seem set for more precious metal in Nassau. The heats start at 9.12 tonight, with the final at 9.55 p.m. tomorrow.

The gun goes off at 8.31 tonight for the first women's 4x400m heat. Team T&T—Janeil Bellille, Domonique Williams, Selvon and Charles—will bid for a spot in the championship race at 9.11 tomorrow night.

The T&T team for tomorrow's women's 4x100m event will be picked from Kelly-Ann Baptiste, 2017 Flow Carifta Games girls' under-20 double sprint champion Khalifa St Fort, Ahye, Hackett, Thomas and Durant. The heats start at 8 p.m., with the final scheduled for 10.13.

The men's 4x200m heats are on from 7.35 tomorrow evening, with the final at 9.29 p.m. Richards, Bledman, Callender, Greaux, Telesford and Quow are the six men selected for national duty in this event.

And Williams, Charles, Solomon, Quow and Richards have been named for the mixed 4x400m relay. This race—a new addition to the programme—is scheduled for 10.30 tomorrow night, and will bring the curtain down on the 2017 World Relays meet.

A total of 21 athletes are in Nassau to fly the Red, White and Black. Dexter Voisin is the manager, while the coaches are Dr Ian Hypolite, Charlie Joseph and Ken Barton.

Dr Anyl Gopeesingh, Nicole Fuentes and Jason Pilgrim make up the medical team.
