Guevara pockets two Challenge gold medals

T&T's Asa Guevara sported two gold medals at the end of the Brutus Hamilton Challenge held in Berkley, California, on the weekend.

The Chaguanas-native mounted the top of the podium after clocking 47.23 seconds in the men's 400 metres final. Guevara later teamed up with his UTEP squad to win the 4x100m in 40.42 at the two-day meet.

The weekend before the local quartermiler placed third in the 400m in a time of 46.81 at a meet hosted by his university in El Paso, Texas. The relay team also improved on its previous time of 40.70 in placing second.

At the Lenny Lyles-Clark Wood Invitational in Louisville, Kentucky, local sprinter Peli Alzola had quite a busy schedule as she faced the starter in three events.

Alzola was part of the Western Kentucky relay team that bagged a bronze in the women's 4x100m in 45.19. Her 4x400m relay squad just missed out on a medal placing fourth in 3:46.26. He also lined up in the 200m and her time of 25.24 placed the senior 13th overall in the timed final.

Chelsea Anika Charles had a third-place with her Arkansas-Little Rock team in the 4x400m after they crossed the line in 3:57.32 at the Memphis Invitational in Tennessee.

At the Drake Relays in Des Moines, Iowa, there were a number of T&T Olympians that competed including Adidas trio Jehue Gordon, Renny Quow and Sparkle McKnight. Also in action was University of Missouri's Tsai-Anne Joseph.

Gordon, the 2013 400m hurdles World champion, competing was sixth in the event in 51.93 while Quow lined up in the 400m but did not finish the race which also had Rio Olympic gold medallist Grenadian Kirani James, who placed sixth in 46.21 and eventual winner American LaShawn Merritt (45.41). while McKnight was seventh in 1:00.15 in the women's 400m hurdles special.

Joseph ran in the women's 100m dash and her time of 12.18 placed her 15th overall, not quick enough to advance to the final. The sophomore was sixth with her Missouri teammates in the 4x100m relay in 46.39.

On Thursday, at ACU Wildcat Open in Abilene, Texas, Mauricia Prieto and her South Plains team won the 4x400m relay in 3:43.02.
