Trinidad and Tobago's Portious Warren erased a 27-year-old record from the books at the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Region I Track & Field Championships in Arizona, USA, on Thursday.

Warren threw a personal best 16.90 metres to strike gold in the women's shot put, the Central Arizona College athlete bettering the 16.86m NJCAA standard--established way back in 1990 by Nigerian Grace Apiafi.

Warren opened with the big 16.90m effort. The 21-year-old followed up at 15.77m, 15.66m, 15.85m and 15.44m, and then closed off the competition with a 16.22m throw.

Warren picked up silver in the discus with a 41.84m effort. And on Tuesday, she seized silver in the javelin at 38.79m and finished fourth in the hammer throw at 48.39m.

There was double gold for Jeminise Parris at the NJCAA Region I meet.

The Central Arizona College freshman topped the women's 100 metres hurdles in 13.64 seconds. In the 100m dash, she clocked 11.84 for the victory. And in the 400m hurdles, Parris snapped up silver in one minute. 03.14 seconds.

At the Doha IAAF Diamond League meet, in Qatar, yesterday, T&T's Cleopatra Borel finished fifth in the women's shot put with a 17.96m throw. Borel saved her best for last, throwing 17.96 in the sixth and final round.

Olympic champion Michelle Carter, of the United States, grabbed gold with a big 19.32m effort--the only 19-plus throw in the competition. Hungarian Anita Marton (18.99m) earned silver, with bronze going to Aliona Dubitskaya (18.90m) of Belarus. Another Belarus thrower, Yuliya Leantsiuk (18.22m) was fourth.
