Charles strikes gold in one-lap sprintRachael Thomspon-King :: Trinidad Guardian :: 15.05.2017T&T's Chelsea Anika Charles raced to gold in the women's 400 metres at the Sun Belt Conference Championship in UT-Arlington - Maverick Stadium in Arlington, Texas in the USA on the weekend. Charles, a senior at the Arkansas-Little Rock University, clocked 53.51 seconds to reach the top of the podium after qualifying for the final with the fastest time of 54.00. The following day, Charles, running a split time of 52.60, anchored her Arkansas-Little Rock team to silver in the 4x400m relay in 3:41.52. At the Southeastern Conference (SEC) Outdoor Track and Field Championships in South Carolina, senior Domonique Williams of the University of Alabama secured a silver medal in 52.54 in the women's 400m final. The senior athlete had progressed to the medal race after placing third in 53.05 in heat five. Williams went on to cop a bronze in the 4x400m relay when her Alabama team crossed the line in 3:30.94. Also getting success at the meet was Jereem Richards of University of Alabama, who clocked 20.22 to take bronze in the men's 200m. This after the junior qualified with the fastest time of 19.98 (wind-assisted) in the preliminary round. Akanni Hislop also featured in that event but did not advance out of the opening heats. The Louisiana State University (LSU) freshman placed 17th overall after crossing fourth in heat four in 20.88. Another LSU sprinter Xavier Mulugata and University of Missouri's Jonathan Holder were 33rd and 34th, in times of 21.90 and 22.04, respectively. Both Hislop and Holder lined up in the men's 100m and the former's time of 10.50 placed him 16th overall while Holder's eighth place finish in the third heat, put him 30th (10.96). In the women's version of the dash, Kentucky University junior Kayelle Clarke was seventh in heat one and her time of 11.65 placed her 23rd while Tsai-Ann Joseph, a sophomore at Missouri State, followed her to the line in eighth place in 11.91 to finish 30th overall. Neither advanced to the final as only the top nine quickest times qualified for the medal race. The Clarke suffered a similar fate in the 200m as her time of 23.10 placed her 12th overall and in the 4x100m, her Kentucky team just missed out on a medal placing fourth in 43.49. Joseph too competed in the relay event and her Missouri team placed ninth in 45.07. In the relays, Richards had mixed results as his Alabama 4x400m unit got bronze in 3:02.75 and the 4x100m team placed eighth in 39.52. University of Alabama junior Ruebin Walters also just missed out on a medal in the men's 110m hurdles, placing fourth in 13.56. He also faced the starter in the 400m hurdles event and was 10th in the preliminary round in 52.74, not quick enough to move on to the final. On Friday at IC4A/ECAC Outdoor Track & Field Championships in Princeton, New Jersey, Haysean Cowie-Clarke bagged a bronze in the men's 100m in 10.61. He was 12th in the 200m in 21.86 and his Coppin State team placed fourth in the 4x100m relay (41.12). His schoolmate Khemani Roberts was fifth in the high jump reaching 1.71m and was part of Coppin State 4x100m team that placed 19th in 48.47. Another Coppin State athlete Mark London was 34th overall in the men's 800m in 1:54.19. At the Conference USA Outdoor Track & Field Championship in UTEP, El Paso, Texas, Peli Alzola narrowly missed out on making the women's 100m final, finishing ninth in 11.74. The Western Kentucky senior was 11th (24.20) in the 200m. She did pick up two medals though with her 4x100m team claiming silver in 45.04 and bronze in the 4x400m in 3:39.02. UTEP's Asa Guevara also got a relay silver in the men's 4x400m (3:06.94). His team was fourth in the 4x100m relay final in 40.58. The UTEP junior was ninth in the 400m in 47.76. |
