Warren strikes NJCAA gold!

Kwame Laurence :: Trinidad Express :: 19.05.2017

Portious Warren captured the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Outdoor Track and Field Championship women's shot put title in Kansas, USA, yesterday.

The Central Arizona College sophomore threw the iron ball 15.89 metres to take the gold.

"The distance wasn't what I wanted," Warren told the Express. "The weather was the worst I have ever competed in. The event was delayed—thunder, lightning and pouring rain. I had to do walk-throughs instead of glide."

Two Thursdays ago, Warren threw a personal best 16.90m to break a 27-year-old NJCAA record. Today, Warren will compete in the NJCAA Championship women's discus and javelin events. On Thursday, she fouled out of the hammer throw.

Another Trinidad and Tobago athlete, Dawnel Collymore was golden yesterday in the women's 4x800 metres relay. Collymore performed leadoff leg duties for Monroe College in the school's nine minutes, 09.52 seconds winning run.
