Romeo hits 18 in Cuba

Hezekiel Romeo hit the 18-metre mark for the first time in his career at the Barrientos Memorial meet in Havana, Cuba, on Sunday. 

The Trinidad and Tobago athlete threw the iron ball a personal best 18.06 metres for a runaway victory in the men's shot put.

American Tyson Jones produced a 16.96m effort for a very distant second. Third spot, meanwhile, went to Cuba's Lazaro Acosta with a 16.95m throw.

Romeo opened Sunday's competition at 17.32m, and improved to 17.53 in round two. He followed up at 17.36, before fouling his fourth round attempt. 

But the 23-year-old got it right on his next trip to the throwing circle, landing the shot 18.06m for a major career breakthrough. He then closed off his campaign at 17.14.

Romeo, whose previous best was 17.87, was one of three T&T shot putters on show at the Barrientos Memorial.

Cleopatra Borel seized silver for T&T in the women's shot put with a 17.82m throw. Her training partner, Cherisse Murray threw a personal best 15.18m to finish fifth.
