Golden in Grenada

Whitsuntide wins for Murray, Durant, Telesford, James

Cherisse Murray continued her fine run of form with victory at the Whitsuntide Games in Grenada, on Sunday. The Trinidad and Tobago field athlete whipped her rivals in the women's shot put, seizing gold with a personal best 15.35 metres—a new Games record.

On May 19, at the Hasely Crawford Stadium, Murray won the NAAA (National Association of Athletics Administrations) Sunshine Development Meet shot put title with a 15.11m effort. Two Sundays ago, she threw 15.18m for fifth spot at the Barrientos Memorial meet in Havana, Cuba.

Murray's improvement continued at the Kirani James Athletics Stadium on Sunday, the 23-year-old Toco lass producing the best throw of her career to secure the Whitsuntide title. Grenadian Candesha Scott was a distant second at 12.22m.

Kamaria Durant outsprinted her T&T teammate Reyare Thomas for gold in the women's 200 metres. Durant clocked 23.17 seconds, while Thomas picked up silver in 23.27. St Kitts and Nevis sprinter Tameka Williams had to settle for bronze in 23.86. University of T&T (UTT) student Sade Andrews got home in 25.15 to finish sixth.

Dan-Neil Telesford earned gold for T&T in the men's 200m with a 20.70 seconds run. Kyron McMaster of the British Virgin Islands and Grenadian Rondell Bartholomew earned silver and bronze, respectively, clocking 20.76 and 21.09. UTT's Darren Alfred was seventh in 21.44.

T&T halfmilers Jamaal James and Ashton Gill finished one-two in the men's 800m. James returned a time of one minute, 51.50 seconds for the win, with Gill second in 1:52.05.

The UTT combination of Alfred, Tauren George, Lincoln London and Kirdell McIntosh clocked 3:18.04 to strike gold in the men's 4x400m relay.

And Anderson Peters treated his home fans to a superb display of throwing, the 19-year-old Grenadian winning the men's javelin with a huge 81.23m effort—a new national, meet and stadium record.

At Saturday's All-Comers #4 meet, in Jamaica, T&T sprinter Emmanuel Callender won the men's 200m in 20.77 seconds. Jamaican Mario Forsythe finished second in 20.93. Another T&T athlete, Zwede Hewitt was fifth fastest in 21.42.

Callender bagged bronze in the 100m dash in 10.23 seconds. Jamaicans Tyquendo Tracey and Chad Walker were first and second, respectively, both sprinters clocking 10.16. T&T's Nathan Farinha was 21st overall in 10.68.
