St Fort, Horsford, Roach impress at Junior ‘Nationals’

Double Carifta champion Khalifa St Fort blew away her competition yesterday to clinch the Girls Under-20 100m crown at yesterday's NGC/NAAA National Junior Championships at the Hasely Crawford Stadium, Mucurapo.

St Fort, the 2015 Pan Am Junior champion, registered the fastest qualifying time of the day (11.45 seconds) then went faster to take the gold in the final with an 11.40 clocking. 

Shikyla Walcott of Simplex was a distant second in 11.74 while Sarah Wollaston crossed third in 11.87. The Men's equivalent had a frenetic finish with Abilene Wildcats' Jerod Elcock showing his composure to snatch victory ahead of Jalen Purcell (Simplex). 

The final was always going to be showdown between the pair with .04 seconds separating Elcock (10.31) and Purcell (10.35) in the semis. Ironically .04 seconds was the difference again in the final with Elcock crossing the line in 10.32 while Purcell followed in 10.36. Toco Titans' Tyrel Edwards claimed the bronze in 10.56. 

Carifta Under-18 record holder Tyriq Horsford put on a spectacle by himself to unsurprisingly take the gold in the Boys Under-18 javelin event. 

Horsford, who represents Zenith, opened his account with a powerful throw of 73.15m. 

He followed that effort with 69.43m and 62.74m before passing on his final three attempts. 

All three of his efforts were good enough for gold. His clubmate Kareem Peters got the silver (54.62m) while Selvon Rochford of Five Rivers Secondary took bronze (52.44m). 

Another Carifta champion Ianna Roach of Memphis Pioneers stamped her authority on the field with a dominating performance to triumph in the Girls Under-18 shot put. Roach heaved the metal ball 14.91m on her fifth attempt, bettering her effort at this year's Carifta Games. All her throws were over 14m with her lowest – 14.01m – sufficient for gold. 

Tonya Chapman, competing for Zenith, was second with a throw of 13.35m while Striders' Shantel Licorish came third with 11.55m. 

There was plenty action in the Girls Under-18 100m final courtesy Briana Williams who left her rivals in the dust with a breezy 11.55 finish. 

Zenith's Ayla Stanisclaus was a distant second in 11.91 while Memphis Pioneer's Deleth Charles got bronze ina time of 11.93. 

Abilene's Adell Colthrust topped the Boys Under-188 100 dash, sprinting across the line in 10.45 ahead of Brandon Monsegeue of Point Fortin New Jets (10.79) and Dominic Cole (10.86), also of Abilene Wildcats.
