WALCOTT 3RD IN TURKU

Kwame Laurence :: Trinidad Express :: 14.06.2017

Keshorn Walcott produced a fine performance at the Paavo Nurmi Games IAAF World Challenge meet in Turku, Finland, yesterday. The 2012 Olympic champion landed the spear 86.48 metres to capture men's javelin bronze. He finished behind the 2016 Olympic gold medallist Thomas Rohler (88.26m) and his German teammate Johannes Vetter (87.88m).

Walcott opened at 83.64m and at the end of the first round was in third spot. He fouled in round two and threw 80.21m in the third round. Heading into the second half of the competition, the Trinidad and Tobago athlete was fourth, and in need of a big throw.

He got it in round four, the 86.48m effort pushing him back into the bronze medal position. Yet, Walcott was disappointed, the 24-year-old having set extremely high standards for himself. In the last two rounds, he threw 81.00m and 83.24m.

Walcott seems set to enjoy one of his best-ever seasons. He won his 2017 opener in Vantaa, Finland on May 27 with an 84.16m effort. The Toco thrower followed up with bronze at last Thursday's Golden Gala IAAF Diamond League meet in Rome, Italy with a season's best 86.61m.
