Over 300 go after Cox OWTU title tomorrow

Organisers are expecting a field of over 300 runners to challenge defending champion Curtis Cox in the Open (men and women) divisions 20 km run tomorrow.

The field size was projected as runners attempt to beat yesterday's registration deadline.

The race, which is perhaps the most popular middle distances race on the annual T&T sporting calendar, will start at Oilfield Workers' Trade Union Headquarters (OWTU) Paramount Building, Circular Road, San Fernando, at 5.30 am and head to Royal Road, then south onto the San Fernando Bye-Pass, through La Romaine, before the field link up on South Trunk Road at Paria Suites, and head to Fyzabad to finish at Fyzabad Junction, where thousands of celebrating fans and workers will greet them.

Cox's challengers will include, Collin Pereira—who he defeated to win the Eastern Credit Union 15km road race. However, in the Point Fortin Borough 7.5 km road race last April it was Pereira, who reversed the tables on Cox, who finished fourth. The other challengers expected are Kelvin Johnson, Lionel Dandrade, Jamaican Triathlete Bromfield Jarette and Ted John.

Labour Day will also see a new women's winner this year as defending women's champion Tonya Nero is out of the country, preparing for this year's World Championship which opens the door for middle-distance runners Christine Regis, Leisl Puckerin and Candice Bekaroo to celebrate.

There will also be a 20kilometre walk which will also start at Circular Road, San Fernando, at 5 am and the a 5 km run which will fire off at 6 am in Harris Village and finishes also at Fyzabad Junction.
