NACAC relay gold for T&T

McKay, Bascombe in pole position

Anthony Diaz, Shakeem McKay, Malika Coutain and Shaniqua Bascombe combined for gold for Trinidad and Tobago in the mixed 13-14 4x100 metres relay on day one of the NLCB North American, Central American and Caribbean (NACAC) Age Group Championships at the Hasely Crawford Stadium in Port of Spain, yesterday.

The T&T quartet bolted around the track in a championship record 46.23 seconds, finishing well ahead of runners-up the Bahamas in 47.15.

McKay was the standout athlete on day one of the boys' 13-14 heptathlon.

First in the shot put at 13.13 metres, second in the 80m dash in 9.27 seconds and fifth in the long jump with a 5.97m leap, the T&T athlete earned 2,425 points for a sizeable cushion on second-placed Aren Spencer (2,273) of Barbados. Diaz (2,244) lies in sixth spot. A third T&T athlete, Tyrique Mejias (1,902) is 24th. Mejias is an exhibition athlete, and not eligible for prizes.

Bascombe will take a 52-point lead into the second day of the girls' 13-14 heptathlon. On day one, she accumulated 2,003 points.
