Jarrin Solomon was the fastest on show in the qualifying round of the NGC/Sagicor/NAAA National Open Track and Field Championship men's 400 metres event, at the Hasely Crawford Stadium in Port of Spain, late yesterday.

Solomon topped the opening heat, the Memphis Pioneers athlete getting round the track in 46.59 seconds. Zenith's Renny Quow got home in 46.98 to win heat two. Junior quartermiler Jacob St Clair provided a solid challenge, but Quow had more gas at the end and claimed the top spot. St Clair was second in 47.57, and also earned a lane in today's championship race.

Defending champion Machel Cedenio of Simplex clocked 47.01 to triumph in heat five. Double Olympic bronze medallist Lalonde Gordon emerged victorious in heat four in 47.73. And Alpha's Tacuma Sterling won the third heat in 48.42. Former national one-lap champions, Deon Lendore and Zwede Hewitt were non-starters.

Domonique Williams opened the defence of her women's 400m title with a strong one-lap effort, the Abilene athlete winning heat one in 52.76 seconds.
