Kwame Laurence :: 06.07.2017

Machel Cedenio aborted his bid for honours at the Athletissima IAAF Diamond League meet in Lausanne, Switzerland, yesterday. Just after the halfway mark in the men's 400 metres event, the Trinidad and Tobago quarter-miler slowed to a stop.

The race was won by Olympic champion Wayde van Niekerk, the South African getting around the track in a world-leading 43.62 seconds — a new meet and Diamond League record. Baboloki Thebe was second in a personal best 44.02, with third spot going to his Botswana teammate Isaac Makwala (44.08).

On Tuesday, at the Istvan Gyulai Memorial meet in Hungary, Cedenio clocked 45.47 seconds for third spot in the 400m, behind Bahamian Steven Gardiner (44.61) and Slovenia's Luka Janezic (45.44). Another T&T quarter-miler, Renny Quow was fifth in 45.78.
