Roberts and Douglas finish in Top 20

Khemani Roberts and Kechelle Douglas were unable to add any more medals to T&T's tally of five at the end of day two in the senior women's heptathlon at the Pan American Combined Events Cup in Ottawa, Canada, yesterday.

Roberts placed 10th earning 5,090 points and Douglas finished 16th with 4,367 in the seven-discipline event. Canadian Nicole Oudenaarden of University of Calgary Athletics won gold with 6,000 points and American Sami Spencer was third.

At the end of the first day, Roberts accumulated 3,226 points to sit in eighth place after completing four disciplines. She earned 874 points after placing 11th in the 100m hurdles in 14.76 seconds; third in the high jump at 1.73m (891); 15th in the shot put with 10.26m (546) and in the 200m in 24.70 (915). She was hoping to improve her position the next day but was 13th in the long jump 5.22m (620), 14th in the javelin at 33.18m (537) and in the 800m, crossed in 2:28.85 to place 11th (707).

On Tuesday, Tyra Gittens earned 5,490 to break her own national junior heptathlon record in winning gold in the girls' Under-20 heptathlon. She improved on 5,337-point standard in the seven-discipline event which the local heptathlete had established in Texas, USA, last year.

Gittens beat Canadian Megan Dunn into second with 4,648 points and third was American Michaela Banyi with 4,382. The other T&T athlete in the event, Anya Akili was forced to withdraw after picking up an injury in the 100m hurdles on Monday.

Gittens topped all four disciplines on the opening day to garner a huge lead heading into day two. She crossed first in the 100m hurdles in a wind-assisted 14.17 seconds, cleared the bar at 1.81m in the high jump, measured 12.37m in the shot put and clocked 24.90 to get to the line first in the 200m.

The following day, Gittens leaped 5.98m in the long jump, threw 33.90m in the javelin to place third and was fourth in the 800m in 2:40.38.

Antonia Sealy, Safiya John, Kerlon Ashby and Joel Andrews grabbed more medals for T&T in Ottawa on Tuesday in their respective competition.

Sealy produced 4,316 points to emerge the champion in the girls' U-18 heptathlon while John was the runner-up with 4,004. Canadian Lexi Kundlacz got bronze with 3,717.

Ashby bagged bronze in the boys' U-20 decathlon with 5,833 points, placing behind winner Canadians Laurent Grandmangin (6,076) and second place Joshua Mather (6,009).

Andrews also collected a bronze in the boys' U-18 decathlon after tallying 5,675 points. Winning gold was Guatemala's Mauricio Galindo (6,011) and the silver medal was claimd by Canadian Ethan Foster (5,902).
