Sparkle bags Madrid bronzeKwame Laurence :: Trinidad Express :: 15.07.2017Sparkle McKnight bagged bronze in the women's 400 metres hurdles at the Meeting Madrid IAAF World Challenge meet, in Spain, yesterday. The Trinidad and Tobago athlete got home in 55.87 seconds—the fifth fastest time of her career. There was a close battle for gold between Canadian Sage Watson and American Cassandra Tate. It was Watson who was stronger at the end, claiming victory in 54.59 seconds. Tate clocked 54.80 to capture silver. Renny Quow finished fifth in the men's 400m "B" race. The T&T quarter-miler had the satisfaction, however, of diving under the 45.50 seconds IAAF World Championship qualifying standard. Quow clocked 45.41 to earn the right to contest the individual one-lap event at the August 4-13 Worlds in London, England. National champion Machel Cedenio and double Olympic bronze medallist Lalonde Gordon will also fly the T&T flag in the men's 400m at Worlds. Gordon faced the starter in the Meeting Madrid 400m "A" race, but was a non-finisher. Become a subscriber to the Trinidad Express Newspapers for access to all our articles via our e-paper. |
