Colthrust sprints to 100m gold at Commonwealth Youth Games

ADELL Colthrust of Trinidad and Tobago sprinted to gold in the boys 100m final at the 2017 Commonwealth Youth Games in Bahamas, on Thursday night.

It was this country's first medal at the Games. Colthrust won gold in 10.55 seconds, finishing ahead of Jamaican Kevon Stone (10.59), Adrian Curry of Bahamas (10.61) and Dominican Danelson Mahautiere in 10.61. 

Colthrust won both of his races leading up to the final. In round one, Colthrust won heat four in 10.63 to book a spot in the semifinals. 

Mahautiere was second in heat four in 10.68. It was an identical result in the semi-finals with Colthrust winning in 10.63 ahead of Mahautiere in 10.68. 

Akilah Lewis of TT did not advance to the final of the girls 100m. Lewis missed a spot in the final after finishing fourth in the girls 100m semi-final one in 12.24. Earlier, Lewis qualified for the semi-finals after placing third in 12.27 in heat four of round one. Tylar Lightbourne of Bahamas won the heat in 12.22 and Australian Mia Patricia Gross was second in 12.26. Both Lewis and Colthrust did not start their respective 200m events. 

In beach volleyball, the TT boys team of Devaughn Martin and Daynte Stewart won the ninth place playoff against Jamaica 21-14, 16-21, 15-10. The TT girls team of Tsyan Selvon and Ebony Williams finished eighth after losing the seventh place playoff to Bahamas 15-21, 21-18, 15-10. 

In boxing, Tyron Thomas of TT lost to Damien Vaughn of Samoa in the boys 81kg quarter- finals, while the TT girls rugby sevens team crushed Bermuda 29-0 in the fifth place playoff. 

The TT tennis duo of Aidan Carter and Emma-Rose Trestrail were convincing in round one of the mixed doubles easing to a 6-0, 6-0 win over a team from Kiribati. 

Unfortunately, they could not continue that form as they lost 6-3, 6-1 to South Africa in the quarter-finals. 

On Thursday, the TT girls beach volleyball team competed in the quarter-finals, but lost in two sets to lend the Australians the victory. Later on the boys made amends with a two-set victory over the Bahamas second team. The girls were in action simultaneously unfortunately losing in a three-set showdown against a resilient Vanuatu outfit. 

However, TT were able to experience success in the women's rugby sevens preliminary match demolishing the Bermudans 20- 0. Unfortunately, in another preliminary match the TT girls were inflicted a 31-0 defeat by Canada
