Cain bows out in Para Worlds 200

Trinidad and Tobago sprinter Nyoshia Cain bowed out in the qualifying round of the women's 200 metres T44 event at the World Para Athletics Championships in London, England, yesterday. Cain got home in 29.55 seconds to finish fifth in heat two and 10th overall. The top eight progressed to today's final.

Irmgard Bensusan topped heat two in 27.50 seconds, finishing ahead of Fleur Jong (27.59) of the Netherlands. But it was Jong's teammate, Marlou van Rhijn who was most impressive in the qualifying round, the Dutchwoman winning heat one in a T43 championship record time of 26.52.

Going into the final day of the 2017 Para Worlds, T&T are 37th on the medal table with one gold medal and one bronze. Akeem Stewart earned the gold in the men's javelin F44, the Tobago field athlete winning with a 57.61 metres F43 world record throw. The bronze was bagged by Cain in the women's 100m T44 event in 13.25 seconds.

Stewart will have the opportunity to increase the T&T tally when he competes this morning (TT time) in the men's shot put F44. Following his javelin victory, last Tuesday, Stewart said the shot put event is his main focus in London.

"This (javelin) is an event I only do as a sideline. I was injured in the discus and needed to do this to be able to do the shot (put). That's my main event. I was just giving this a go, really. I didn't expect to win at all."
