TT 4x100m relay team place third in Peru

TRINIDAD and Tobago snatched a bronze medal in the boys 4x100-metre relay event at the Pan American Junior Championships in Peru, yesterday.

The TT quartet earned bronze in 39.90 seconds, after finishing behind winners United States (39.33) and silver medallists Jamaica (39.74). 

After four events in the girls heptathlon, Tyra Gittens of TT is in contention for a medal. In the first event, Gittens was second in her 100m hurdles heat in 14.11 and got 964 points. In the high jump she was second overall with a 1.72m leap and earned 879 points. 

Gittens then placed fifth in the shot put with a top throw of 11.62m to snatch a further 636 points. 

In the fourth and final event of the day, Gittens got 886 points after winning her 200m heat in 25.01. 

Today in the final day of the Championships, Gittens will compete in the long jump, javelin and 800m events. 

In the boys 200m final, the TT pair of Akanni Hislop and Jerod Elcock had to settle for fourth and fifth place respectively. 

Hislop was fourth in 20.84 and Elcock was fifth in 21.13. 

Earlier, Hislop (21.45) and Elcock (21.27) both finished second in their respective heats to qualify for the final.
