DOUBLE TROUBLE AKEEM

Super Stewart golden again with another world record

Kwame Laurence :: Trinidad Express :: 24.07.2017

AKEEM STEWART was absolutely dominant in winning the men's shot put F44 title at the World Para Athletics Championships in London, England, yesterday. Stewart's huge 19.08 metres effort handed him the easiest of victories, as well as the F43 world record.

Already the F44 javelin champion, Stewart's shot put triumph made him a double gold medallist at the global meet. He had established a new F43 world record in last Tuesday's javelin event, landing the spear 57.61m. But the Trinidad and Tobago field athlete was even more impressive in yesterday's shot put, his 19.08m monster throw earning him a huge cushion on Slovakia's Adrian Matusik, the silver medallist at 15.99. Bronze was bagged by Egypt's Ibrahim Ahmed Abdelwareth (15.65).

Stewart had five legal throws, each one making a mockery of the previous F43 world record of 14.21m. The 25-year-old stamped his class on the competition with an 18.34 opener, and followed up at 18.02. He fouled in round three but bounced back with the massive 19.08 throw.
