AHYE LEADS THE CHARGE

Women's 100 & men's 400 heats today

MICHELLE-LEE Ahye will lead the charge for Trinidad and Tobago in the opening round of the IAAF World Championship women's 100 metres event, here in London, England, this morning.

Second on the 2017 global performance list with the 10.82 seconds national record run she produced at the T&T Championships in June, Ahye is a definite medal contender. The 25-year-old track star told the Express her record-breaking dash was a timely booster following an ordinary early-season campaign.

"This year it's been a rocky start, but it ended up going good in the middle part, so I'm ready to run. People say the Trinidad track is skeptical for the 100, blah blah blah, all that nonsense, but that 10.82 at the trials gave me confidence.

"And for the past couple weeks," Ahye continued, "I felt a lot faster than how I felt for the trials, so we'll wait to see the results."

Another T&T sprinter, Kelly-Ann Baptiste is also among the athletes who could challenge for a spot on the podium in tomorrow's final. In addition to Ahye and Baptiste, the list of contenders includes Ivorians Murielle Ahoure and Marie Josee Ta Lou, Dutchwoman Dafne Schippers, American Tori Bowie and Jamaica's double Olympic sprint champion Elaine Thompson, the clear favourite for gold.
